1 The seasons occur because the axis on which Earth turns is tilted with respect to the
plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun. Earth's tilt causes the North Pole to be tilted
toward the Sun for half of the year, and the South Pole to be tilted toward the Sun for
the other half of the year. The hemisphere that is tilted toward the Sun has a longer
5 d(3Y,receives more of the Sun's rays, ~nd receives the Sun's rays more directly than the
hemisphere tilted away from the Sun. When it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere,
this hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun; this corresponds to winter in the Southern
Hemisphere, when the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun. If Earth's axis
was not tilted, each night and day everywhere on Earth would always be 12 hours long
10 and seasons would not occur. The axis of the planet Mars is also tilted with respect to
the plane of Mars's orbit around the Sun, so Mars experiences seasons much like those
of Earth.
26. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The seasons of Earth
B. Circumstances of different seasons on Earth
C. Reasons of different seasons on Mars

1 Solar energy can also be used for cooling. An absorption air conditioner or refrigerator
uses a large solar collector to provide the heat that drives the cooling process. The Sun's
heat brings the mixture to a boil. The refrigerant, often ammonia, vaporizes, rises as a
gas, and reaches the condenser. There it gives off heat and returnsto liquid form. As the
5 drops of pure refrigerant fall, they trickle into the evaporator or freezing unit where
they evaporate vigorously. Evaporation requires heat energy, which comes from the
surroundings, and results in cooling: The refrigerant absorbs heat from the unit and
cools the space. The refrigerant, now a gas again, rejoins the mixture in the boiler to
restart the process.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Solar energy
B. Solar collector
C. Solar cooling
D. The Sun's heat
E. The Refrigerator

Text 3
1 John Moses Browning {1855-1926} was an American inventor famous for his
innovations to the design of firearms. Born in Ogden, Utah, Browning spent most of his
youth working in his fathers gunsmith shop. At the age of 13 he made his first gun, a
single-shot rifle, from scrap metal.
5 Browning invented some of the most widely used weapons in the history of
firearms and developed several important improvements for guns. His patents
included designs for breech-loading, automatic-loading, and' repeating rifles and
shotguns. Impressed with his design, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company
funded production of the rifles. Browning went on to design many different firearms
10 for Winchester, including a lever-action repeating rifle, a lever-action repeating
shotgun, and a pump-action shotgun. He invented more successful firearms than any
other American, and since his death there have been few fundamental changes in the
manufacture of firearms.
